Tips to Protect your Identity Online as a Young Person

In our last educational post, we talked about how to protect your identity online. Despite it applying to everyone, we noticed that with more and more of the younger generation getting on social media these days, it’s become even more significant for them to learn how to protect their identity online! That’s why we compiled more tips for younger people to learn how to do exactly that.

1. Make your Profile Private

First of all, privacy is key in protecting one’s identity on the internet. People can’t directly steal or copy information or pictures from you, if you don’t give them access to them in the first place. There are tons of features that allow you to hide specific information about yourself you don’t want to reveal. Make sure to utilize them whenever necessary!

2. Don’t respond to inappropriate requests / messages

From random messages from strangers to potential cyberbullying taunts, one should never respond to requests or messages that one believes is of a negative nature. Social media can definitely be a source of communication, but it can also be a source of harassment and cyberbullying, so it’s good to always keep a look out for things that seem similar to these.

3. Check your own Digital Footprints

Digital Footprints are exactly what they sound like: information about yourself that’s left on the internet for everyone to see. Checking your own digital footprints by simply searching yourself up can give you a good gauge as to what others would see as your online identity.
