Online Anonymity

Updated: Dec 21, 2022

Bruce Schneider once said: “Privacy is an inherent human right and a requirement for maintaining the human condition with dignity and respect.” We've seen how internet privacy has been repeatedly violated in recent years, not only by governments but also by companies and ordinary individuals. Surprisingly, there has not been a widespread public outcry; in fact, many individuals appear unconcerned, with many believing that if one has nothing to hide, one need not be concerned about privacy.

This is dangerous since most businesses do not have proper security measures in place, which means they may be hacked and the data exploited for personal exploitation by criminals. This is especially problematic for sensitive information. Some businesses even sell their customers' personal information to third parties. This information, in the wrong hands, may be used for blackmail.

We live in a world where many authoritarian regimes still exist, and citizens can be unfairly prosecuted for their actions. Being able to conceal one's identity when criticizing their regime or engaging in seemingly harmless activities such as social media, which is illegal in their country, is extremely beneficial. Anonymity is especially beneficial for doing research on sensitive subjects, since it fosters active engagement and inventiveness. Writing erotic books is an example of an activity that most individuals would not pursue under their actual name owing to a lack of confidence, fear of stigmatization, or other reasons.

Hackers cannot access important information such as personal data, credit card transactions, passwords, or banking information if you are anonymous. Users wouldn't have to worry as much about their personal safety being jeopardized as a result of whatever they were doing online if they used internet anonymity. For example, a user can do whatever they want without others discovering their whereabouts and maybe injuring them.

Until adequate regulations and protection are in place, it is advisable to take matters into your own hands and safeguard your online privacy with technologies like Tor, VPNs, Proxies, and other tools.
