Introduction To GenDigital Says

In Indonesia, the amount of social media users is undoubtedly constantly increasing in number. As the world population grows, this increase comes at no surprise to anyone. According to Hanadian Nurhayati-Wolff, there’s an estimate of about 124.47 million social media users in 2017 and 170 million at the start of 2021.

This is almost a 50 million increase in the amount of social media users in Indonesia. As for the age range in which has the largest share of the total social media users in Indonesia, the same site claims it’s between 25 to 34 for both male and female demographics. All of these statistics show the increase in the amount of social media users specifically in Indonesia.

However, can we really claim this as a ‘good thing’? Despite social media being used as a platform for communication and creativity, social media also has a tendency for being dishonest and not advertising the truth.

A common example would be the amount of photoshop that goes into instagram pictures. It’s unfortunate that the concept that everything always has to be perfect and flawless is being advertised to all social media users. From a young age, this concept has been ingrained into their minds and the ‘distorted reality’ has somehow become real to them. The main question is how does this change things? Find out more in our next post of GenD Says!
