How Social Media Sets Beauty Standards

Updated: Jul 6, 2022

With so many people forming opinions regarding how one should look in the media, it’s easy to get lost in the many expectations people have of us on the outside. This is where we delve into the dark side of social media.

There are tons of false representations of the ideal beauty and even more unrealistic expectations of what one’s body should look like. The false bit here being a mix of models and celebrities promoting products, when in reality there was likely a significant amount of work put into what they look like as of now. It could be a mix of excessive amounts of exercise, plastic surgery, and probably lots of retouching.

This is not to say that ALL models and celebs do this, as there’s been somewhat of a shift in the media and we’re slowly getting to a point of being able to acknowledge that all faces, races and bodies are beautiful. However, it’s still very easy to indulge yourself in this facade that most Instagram users tend to fall into. That’s why so much of our generation’s developed low self-esteem, identity issues and mental health issues. This gives us even more of a reason to advocate that everyone’s beauty should be celebrated.

GenDigital Says

Regardless of what social media says about what beauty is ideal or what you should look like, it’s important to remember that beauty is entirely subjective and we are all beautiful in our own ways.
