Gojek & Tokopedia Merger: GoTo

Around 4 months ago, to be exact, on 17 May 2021, Gojek, one of Southeast Asia’s leading mobile on-demand services and payments platforms, and Tokopedia, a technology company with the leading marketplace in Indonesia, announced their collaboration. They have agreed to form a new partnership that combines their businesses, forming a whole new group: GoTo.

GoTo marks the largest ever business combination/partnership in Indonesia and the largest between two Asia-based internet media and services companies to date. GoTo will create a globally unique business that combines e-commerce, on-demand, and financial services. They will still continue the two companies’ main vision and mission, however further develop each area, such as same-day e-commerce delivery, enhanced financial experience to stakeholders, and more access to underserved markets in Indonesia.

The merger between the two huge companies has signaled a brighter future for Indonesia’s economy as said by the senior vice president of Alibaba Group, managing director of Sequoia Capital (India) Singapore, and Senior Executive President of Tencent. The combined efforts are being expected to bring innovations and drive regional as well as global internet innovation from Indonesia. Seeing this as an opportunity, Lippo Group also joined hand-in-hand with the GoTo Group, creating the Lippo-GoTo partnership. With the addition of Lippo, the GoTo group is expected to be even stronger due to the power of logistics and stores that the Lippo Group has.

Overall, as their mission states, GoTo is expected to “empower progress”, transforming technology into the power of future generations especially for the benefit of every single Indonesian with the strength and view of ‘gotong royong’ (Communities helping each other).
