Recently, nearing the end of 2021, Instagram released a new feature for their Instagram story which is called ‘Add Yours’ where a user will create a prompt where other users (that follow this user) can collaborate/participate by sharing photos related with the prompt. Sounds interesting isn’t it?
Although it sounds fascinating and fun, there are dangers lurking behind this on trial feature. Some stickers/prompts of this Add Yours challenge can be a trap that’s trying to catch our personal information. As an example, you are challenged to mention your location or even your birthdate or your childhood name.
Though it sounds harmless, this information can be used for crimes, with profiling as one of them. Profiling is an activity that collects information to identify someone. The data can come from information that’s revealed by the person itself or by people around them. When done by wrong hands, it can be used for fraud, kidnapping, or blackmails.
To avoid this happening, it is recommended to not overshare anything in social media, especially contents that relate to your personal information. This Add Yours is not “wrong” however it could facilitate oversharing & when the users in Instagram are not wise yet, it could lead to many unwanted dangers. Fortunately, Instagram has taken action by removing the Add Yours stickers that could possibly reveal personal information.
