Don’t Trust Your Eyes: Deepfakes

The terms "deep" and "fake," two common words, are plainly combined to form the name "Deepfake." Here, the term "deep" refers to the deep learning AI technique at play. In synthetic media, deepfake technology is used to fabricate information by replacing or synthesizing faces, audio, and emotions. It is used to digitally mimic an action that a person took but did not actually carry out. Machine learning algorithms may be used to create deepfake software utilizing a variety of methods. These are, to put it simply, algorithms that can produce content based on the data provided. A software must first be taught before it can be given the assignment to generate a new face or replace a specific area of a person's face.

A massive amount of data is provided to the algorithm, which it utilizes to learn how to generate its own, original data. One of the riskiest applications of AI is deepfaking. Most of its real-world uses aim to deceive or discredit people. A deepfake may provide results that are identical to reality. It may damage someone's reputation or lead them to make needless statements or actions. In the hands of con artists, it makes the ideal weapon. It takes time to develop a system that can detect deepfakes. Additionally, these programs require training. Since deepfake has only recently gained popularity, legislation governing its use has not kept up with the technology.

In a recent educational article from GenDigital, we have already discussed about deepfakes and their risks. Deepfakes are manufactured works of art in which the resemblance of a different person is used to replace a real person in a photograph or video. Chaos and uncertainty can result from deepfakes getting into the wrong hands. The power of authorities, celebrities, and influencers is the foundation of our civilization. With their assistance, misinformation may also alter the general atmosphere and inspire action. And similar events have previously happened. Inappropriate films made by Deepfake with famous people in them have frequently surfaced online. For those who want to intimidate or defame others, Deepfake is an extremely nefarious weapon.

The older generations in particular, are not yet completely aware of the technology that exists to substitute a face in a film. However, it's crucial to remember that Deepfakes aren't entirely forbidden. In reality, it is commonly employed in both art and film. This is due to the fact that less time and money will be required to find the suitable person. It only generates great quality at low resolutions, which is a concern. It takes a lot more work to get a result that is satisfactory and of excellent quality. Making renowned portraits communicate in art is another common application of deepfake.
